LOVELOCK - Even though the Pershing County High School varsity girls basketball team has won the last two Division III state championships and is off to a quick start this season, the squad is still looking to get better.
The Lady Mustangs (17-2, 1-0 Lahontan League) had little trouble on the road on Friday with a 62-21 victory at Incline.
"We got off to a good start and played pretty well throughout," said PCHS head coach Steve Cerini. "All of players scored once again, which is really nice. We are still working on drills to finish both uncontested and contested shots inside the paint and free throws as well."
Pershing County held Incline to seven points or less in each of the four quarters. The Lady Mustangs raced out to an 18-5 advantage in the first quarter and increased the lead to 35-8 at halftime.
For the third game in a row, Pershing County played with a running clock, pushing the margin above 40 points in the fourth quarter. Games go to a running clock when a team leads by more than 40 points.
Pershing County traveled to Fallon on Tuesday to face Churchill County in a Lahontan League matchup. The Greenwave are currently second in the Division I-A North at 4-2, with losses to Spring Creek and Elko. Results were not available at press time.
The Mustangs travel to Yerington on Friday for a 6 p.m. tipoff with the Lions. The game was originally set to be played in Lovelock but was moved. Pershing County returns home on Saturday to play Dayton at 2 p.m., beginning a four-game homestand.
"We are consistently leaving too many points on the floor right now," Cerini said. "We may need them down the stretch. Those are areas we know we need to improve on. All that being said, I sure enjoy the energy these girls bring on a nightly basis. Their commitment is second to none."
