BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity girls basketball team won all four of its games at the WREC Classic this past weekend in Wells.
The Lady Longhorns (4-0) opened with a 54-38 win over Jackpot on Thursday and won twice on Friday, beating Carlin 50-3 and Wells 55-44. Battle Mountain finished the tournament with a 43-37 victory over Eureka.
"We are playing with five sophomores on the varsity team this year," said BMHS head coach Paul Tremayne. "I thought all of them contributed and were able to get some valuable time this weekend. This was the first time we had played in the WREC Classic, and it was a good experience for us."
In the win over Jackpot, Tremayne said the Lady Longhorns played well for their first game of the season, citing the play of his big girls and the offense as examples.
Abbie Mikelson posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, as did Kelsey Kroll with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Hannah Hale added seven points and six rebounds.
Battle Mountain had little trouble against Carlin, jumping out to an 18-0 advantage in the first quarter. Eight different players scored for the Lady Longhorns, and the coach said all the girls got significant playing time.
Mikelson scored 12 points and had five rebounds, while Hale and Caitlyn Warwood had nine and eight points, respectively.
Battle Mountain overcame a four-point deficit, 21-17, to come back and beat Wells, one of the better Northern 1A teams.
"The girls did a great job of executing our offense and stepped it up on defense," Tremayne said. "This was a good test for our girls. I think they surprised themselves."
Mikelson had another strong game with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Kroll contributed seven points and seven rebounds and Pooja Bhakta six points and seven assists.
Battle Mountain overcame an even bigger deficit in its final game to come back and defeat Eureka. The Vandals led the Lady Longhorns 26-15 at halftime, but Battle Mountain's defense stepped up in the second half and outscored Eureka 28-11 to earn the six-point win.
Mikelson led the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Samuelson added 11 points and Brook Quintana six points.
"Brook, who is just a sophomore, applied pressure on the Eureka guards and led the comeback," added the coach. "Eureka is well coached and for our girls to rally and win was a very good thing."
Battle Mountain travels to Virginia City for the Comstock Classic to be played Thursday through Saturday.
