Lady Longhorns split four games at Comstock Classic BMHS to host tournament this weekend

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity girls basketball team split its four games last weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

The Lady Longhorns (6-2) defeated Smith Valley 35-25 on Thursday and split two games on Friday, beating Virginia City 34-18 and falling to Mineral County 36-21. Battle Mountain dropped its second consecutive game on Saturday, losing 37-26 to Coleville (Calif.).

Battle Mountain jumped out to a 21-11 lead over Smith Valley and held the 10-point advantage to the end. BMHS head coach Paul Tremayne said the girls did not shoot the ball well and kept the Bulldogs in the game.

Abbie Mikelson continued her strong start to the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Pooja Bhakta added nine points and five rebounds and Caitlyn Warwood had six points.

Battle Mountain built an early lead over Virginia City and made the advantage hold up. Mikelson picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Hale had five points and five rebounds. Sam Samuelson scored seven points.

"Again we played hard and led this game all of the way," Tremayne said. "We did not shoot the ball very well and are working hard and doing a lot of good things. Just need to knock down some shots."

Battle Mountain held a 7-5 lead over Mineral County in the first quarter, but the Lady Longhorns were outscored 21-3 by the Serpents in the second and fourth quarters - including 10-0 in the fourth period.

Mikelson had eight points and seven rebounds and Warwood six points.

"The theme of the week is poor shooting," added the coach. "The girls had some good looks but just could not convert. We are defending well. Some of our youth may be playing into the inconsistency. We just have to keep getting better each week."

In Battle Mountain's final game of the tournament, Coleville raced to a double-figure lead in the first half and held the Lady Longhorns to 14 points at the half. Battle Mountain did not score more than eight points in any quarter.

Battle Mountain makes its home debut this weekend, playing in the Longhorn Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
