BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity girls basketball team met up with Pershing County, the defending 2A state champion, for the second time in two weeks, and was defeated 67-17 by the Mustangs on Friday night in Battle Mountain.
Abbie Mikelson tied the game at 2-2 in the early going for Battle Mountain, but Pershing County scored the next 13 points to lead 15-2. Hannah Hale scored the next two baskets for the Lady Longhorns, however the Mustangs continued to build their advantage to 25-6 at the end of the first period.
Battle Mountain (8-7) connected on just one field goal in the second quarter, an opening basket by Mikelson, and went nearly 14 minutes without another field goal. Pershing County answered back with a 25-2 run to build a 50-10 lead in the first half.
The final 30 seconds of the first half and all of the second half was played under a running clock, as the new 40-point rule adopted by the NIAA this season took effect.
Sam Samuelson ended a nearly 14-minute-long streak without a field goal, as she gave Battle Mountain its first points of the second half with 1:04 left in the third period. Pershing County outscored Battle Mountain 9-2 in the third period to lead 59-13.
Hale and Mikelson led the Lady Longhorns with six points apiece. Daisy Hernandez and Samuelson each scored two points and Pooja Bhakta one.
Battle Mountain was on the road Saturday in Silver Springs and was defeated 43-38 by Silver Stage, in the final crossover game for the Lady Longhorns.
Battle Mountain was scheduled to open its Ruby Mountain League schedule on Tuesday in Elko. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Longhorns play host to Lowry on Friday and travel to Spring Creek on Tuesday for a pair of 6 p.m. games.
