BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team entered the Northern 2A Regional Tournament last Friday in Yerington as the No. 3 seed, which put them up against Whittell, who they had not played all season.
The Lady Longhorns battled but could not come up with the victory that was needed to move on in the tournament. The match went five games with the Warriors winning 21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-11 and 15-11. The Lady Longhorns ended the season at 20-13 overall.
Whittell held a two-point lead in game one until Alexis Johnson took over serving with a one-point deficit and earned four points to put Battle Mountain in the lead. The Lady Longhorns were able to keep the advantage and win the game. The second game went back and forth until Whittell took a three-point lead at 16-13. At that point, Battle Mountain would catch back up, but the Warriors extended the lead back out to win the set.
The third game was neck and neck when Deven Webb began serving at 7-7 for the Lady Longhorns. Webb earned six service points, giving Battle Mountain a 13-7 lead. The Longhorns held onto the advantage even though the Warriors were playing tough. The fourth game was a huge turning point downward for Battle Mountain, according to BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson. Whittell raced out to an 8-0 lead and the Lady Longhorns could not recover.
“We missed a couple of hits, but when we did get a good hit Whittell’s defense was picking it up and able to put together a strong offensive play,” Torgerson said. “We found ourselves giving them lots of ‘free balls,’ and you can’t do that and expect to win.”
The fifth game started out pretty much like the fourth, Torgerson added. The Warriors jumped to a 7-1 lead and increased it to 13-5. Webb was able to put together a string of serves for Battle Mountain to cut the gap to 13-11. However, it was too little, too late, as the Warriors finished the match on the next two plays.
Sheyleie Mortensen had five blocks and four kills for the Lady Longhorns. Alexis Johnson added 19 assists, 12 digs, seven kills, two aces and one block and Hannah Erquiaga nine digs, two assists and one kill. Webb had 15 assists, nine digs, three aces and two kills. Abbie Mikelson added 18 kills, eight blocks and one dig, Shelby Kroll five digs and Jalin Nelson eight digs, six kills and two assists.
