Lady Longhorns fall in four sets to Buckaroos in league opener Hale leads BMHS with 13 kills

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity volleyball team made the short trip to Winnemucca on Friday night to open Ruby Mountain League play against Lowry High School.

The Lady Bucks went on to defeat the Lady Longhorns in four sets, 25-27, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-14. Battle Mountain is now 0-1 in league play and 12-12 overall.

The Lady Longhorns came from behind during the first game of the match to seal the win, but could not hold on to the momentum to win the next three.

"I was proud of the young team for coming from behind in the first game," said BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson. "We got behind at the beginning in the next three games and couldn't get any offense going to change the momentum. You have to hit and be aggressive at the varsity level if you want to win ball games. You can't play it safe. If you find yourself giving the other team free balls (passes on the third contact) then you are going to pay for it. That is happening to us too often."

Amanda Wallock had two assists and one dig for Battle Mountain. Kalin Nelson added four digs and three kills and Gabby Cruz finished with four digs. Pooja Bhakta had a team-high 20 assists to go with five digs and three kills, while Samantha Samuelson had six kills, four aces and four digs. Hannah Hale led the Lady Longhorns with 13 kills, five blocks and a dig. Kelsey Kroll finished with five kills, four blocks and two aces and Daisy Hernandez seven assists, four digs, one block and one kill.
