BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity volleyball team experienced a tough weekend with a road trip to Yerington and Pershing County.
The Lady Longhorns were in Yerington on Friday and lost 25-5, 25-3 and 25-11 to the defending 2A state champions.
"We hit the court playing scared from the very start, allowing the first two servers for the Yerington Lions to score nine and seven points straight," said BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson.
Abbie Mikelson led the Lady Longhorns with six kills to go with two digs and one block. Sam Samuelson had two kills and Kalin Nelson and Kelsey Kroll each had one kill and Pooja Bhakta two assists.
Battle Mountain (12-11) was in Lovelock Saturday to face rival Pershing County and was defeated 25-17, 25-13 and 25-11. Torgerson said the Lady Longhorns hit the court ready to play ball, and led the first game 16-14, when the Mustangs' next two servers took Battle Mountain out of the game.
"We are still facing the same old problem, inconsistent passing, which makes it tough for the setter and that causes inconsistency for the hitters," Torgerson said.
Gabby Cruz had one ace and two digs for the Lady Longhorns, Nelson two kills and one dig and Pooja Bhakta one ace, 13 assists, five digs and two kills. Mikelson had a team-high 11 blocks and six kills to go with four digs. Hannah Hale ended with two kills and Kroll had one block, one kill, two assists and two digs.
Battle Mountain is back on the road Friday to face Lowry at 5 p.m. in Winnemucca.
