Lady Longhorns cruise past Lakers

Hale scores 10 for BMHS

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team is a step closer to securing a spot in the Division III North regional playoffs with a 43-20 home win over North Tahoe on Saturday.

The Lady Longhorns (13-5 overall, 5-3 Division III North) jumped out to a 11-2 lead after eight minutes of play and increased the margin to 25-6 at halftime.

"We jumped to a big lead and never looked back," said BMHS coach Paul Tremyane. "It was a game in which nine of our 10 players scored."

Battle Mountain cruised in the second half, outscoring North Tahoe 18-14.

Hannah Hale led the Lady Longhorns with 10 points and seven rebounds. Brooklyn Quintana and Amanda Wallock each had eight points. Quintana also added four steals. Samantha Samuelson had six points, five rebounds and two steals and Gabby Penola had four points. Caitlyn Warwood and Cheyann Zollinger had two points apiece and Kelsey Kroll one.

The Lady Longhorns sit in the fourth and final spot for the regional playoffs. Incline leads the Division III North at 8-0, White Pine is second at 7-2 and Pershing County is third with a 5-2 record. The Lady Mustangs' two losses are to Incline.

Battle Mountain travels to Silver Springs on Friday to play Silver Stage at 6 p.m. The Lady Longhorns return home Saturday to face Yerington at 2 p.m. The Lions are fifth in the league at 4-5. Battle Mountain will host Incline on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

"This is a big week for us next week with Silver Stage on the road and Yerington at home," Tremyane said. "If we play well and win those two games should be able to secure a spot in regional tournament. The girls are playing well. We just need to continue to work on small things such as free throw shooting, rebounding and we can always improve on defense."[[In-content Ad]]
