Lady Longhorns close out regular season with two wins BMHS to host regional tournament Friday and Saturday

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity volleyball team extended its win streak to five matches after sweeping its last two regular-season league games at home last weekend.

The Lady Longhorns (6-4 Ruby Mountain League, 19-15 overall) defeated West Wendover 25-22, 25-16 and 25-18 on Thursday and White Pine 25-22, 25-14 and 25-21 on Friday afternoon.

"Our goal was to beat them (West Wendover) in three games, since we went four games with them the week before and we did that," said BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson. "I personally wanted a game where I would be able to play all my substitutes and I was able to do that."

McKenzie Huddleston had one kill for the Lady Longhorns. Rebekah Russell added one dig, Kelsey Kroll two aces, two kills, three assists and two digs and Hannah Hale two kills and one block. Abbie Mikelson had a match-high 20 kills to go with six blocks, five digs and one assist, and Samantha Samuelson had nine digs, three kills and one ace. Pooja Bhakta had a match-high 20 assists, along with eight digs, two blocks and one ace. Gabby Cruz added four digs, Kalin Nelson nine kills, one block, one ace and six digs and Amanda Wallock three digs.

Battle Mountain overcame a 6-2 deficit to White Pine in the first game of the day and was able to tie the Lady Bobcats at 9-9. Trailing 20-19, Samuelson stepped up for the Lady Longhorns and served four consecutive points to give Battle Mountain a 23-19 advantage.

"After that we played with confidence and finished out strong," Torgerson said. "We started out strong and maintained that play the second game and the third game was much like the first with the score going back and forth."

The third game was tied 17-17 before Mikelson served three points to make it 21-18 Battle Mountain. The Lady Longhorns were able to close the door on the match from there.

Wallock had three digs on the day, while Nelson added one ace, three kills, three assists and six digs and Cruz one ace and six digs. Bhakta added two kills, six digs and 24 assists, Samuelson one ace, one kill, one assist and six digs and Mikelson 11 blocks, two aces, 13 kills and four digs to finish with a double-double. Hale had one block, 10 kills and one dig, and Kroll one block, one ace, two kills, four assists and five digs.

Battle Mountain High School is hosting the Northern 2A Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m., Friday.

The Lady Longhorns will play North Tahoe Friday at 3 p.m. in the single-elimination tournament. The semifinals begin at 10 a.m. and 11:40 a.m., respectively, on Saturday, with the championship set for 2 p.m.

The NIAA is sponsoring the tournament, and BMHS Booster Club passes and student body cards will not work for admission into the tournament. The admission price is $7 for adults and $5 for students.
