BATTLE MOUNTAIN - In one of its highest-scoring games of the year, the Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls basketball team knocked off West Wendover 52-36 at home on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Longhorns scored the first four points of the game, only to see the Wolverines come back to grab an 11-10 advantage after the opening eight minutes of play.
Battle Mountain went in front for good as Gabby Penola hit a short jump shot and Amanda Wallock finished off an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Lady Longhorns out in front 15-11.
West Wendover closed the deficit to 15-14 midway through the second quarter before Battle Mountain ended the half on a 13-4 run. Wallock had six of those points during the spurt.
Wallock continued her sharp shooting in the second half, as West Wendover left the sophomore open to take 3-point shots. She obliged by making three of the long-distant attempts, capping off a run with a steal and layup to put the Lady Longhorns up 39-24.
A basket by Kaleah Torgerson in the fourth quarter gave Battle Mountain its largest lead of the day at 20 points before the Lady Longhorns eventually settled for the 16-point win.
