Lady Bulldogs split league games with Wells, Jackpot McDermitt sits at 5-2 in Eastern 1A

WINNEMUCCA - With a win at Wells, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team would have pulled into a virtual tie with the Leopards in the Eastern 1A. But the Lady Bulldogs ran into troubles along the way in the 51-42 road loss on Friday, Jan. 24.

The Lady Bulldogs (5-2 Eastern 1A, 13-4 overall) had three of their starters foul out and finished the game with four players on the floor. The loss ended a six-game winning streak, with the last loss coming to Wells on Jan. 6 in McDermitt.

"It was a tough night in Wells to say the least," said MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson. "We didn't rebound at all, and it was a very poor defensive effort overall. We finished the last three minutes with four girls on the floor. I was proud of the way my team pulled together and never quit."

Wells held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter of play but was able to open an eight-point advantage at halftime after an 18-12 run in the second quarter. The Leopards spent much of the night at the free throw line, with 41 attempts. However, Wells could not take advantage of the charity stripe, making only 18 of the shots.

Staheli Wilkinson, Torri Hinkey and Debra McKee each scored 10 points to lead McDermitt. Wilkinson and Hinkey fouled out, as did Sharon Sherburn, who added nine points. Cheyenne Urban scored three points to go with five rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs had just 19 rebounds in the game, with McKee grabbing eight of them.

McDermitt let its frustrations out on Jackpot the following night, holding the Jaguars to eight points or less in every period, en route to a 66-38 victory.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Jaguars 18-5 in the first quarter and built on the lead the rest of the night. Leading 26-10 at halftime, McDermitt outscored Jackpot 40-14 in the second half, including a 21-6 spurt in the third quarter. A night after getting whistled for 21 fouls, the Lady Bulldogs were called for seven.

Sherburn and McKee had dominating performances, as both girls outscored Jackpot by themselves with 27 and 25 points, respectively. Both players had double-doubles, with McKee grabbing 18 rebounds and Sherburn 12.

Wilkinson also had a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists and Hinkey finished with four points and 15 rebounds. Urban did not score but had 12 rebounds and four steals.

McDermitt will look to maintain its second spot in the Eastern 1A as it plays its final home games of the season this weekend. The Lady Bulldogs host Carlin today at 4:30 p.m. and Owyhee Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs close out the regular season at Eureka on Friday, Feb. 10, with the winner earning the No. 2 seed in the league for the upcoming regional tournament to be held in Elko.

"This weekend's games are must wins for us, but honestly if we don't fix the rebounding and defensive problems it could be a long weekend," Wilkinson said.
