WINNEMUCCA - Come this weekend, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team will be able to play an opponent not named Jordan Valley, Ore.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-0) met up with the Mustangs for the second time this year, this past Tuesday in Jordan Valley. In a near carbon-copy of the first meeting on Friday, Nov. 30, in McDermitt, the Lady Bulldogs started of slow before pulling away late for the win.
McDermitt moved to 2-0 on the season with a 47-27 victory over Jordan Valley, despite playing with just six players.
"We played a little sluggish on defense. It's an issue that must be rectified and immediately," said MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson. "I was also a bit disappointed on the lack of effort on boards and especially on the offensive boards. We definitely have our work cut out for us and will be focusing on trying to dominate the paint."
McDermitt held just a one point advantage, 12-11 after a quarter of play, but used an 11-2 run in the second period to take control of the game and lead 23-11 at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs held the Mustangs to 16 points in the final three quarters of play, while expanding the margin to double figures.
Andrea Smart and Sharon Sherburn each had 14 points for McDermitt. Smart, a freshman, made four 3-point field goals on the night. In addition, she had nine rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Sherburn also contributed nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Staheli Wilkinson finished with a triple-double that included 10 points, 11 steals and 10 assists. Lydia Northrup had five points and Va Draunidalo and Deandra Dave scored two points apiece.
"We played with only six players, which made it difficult to give people enough rest," Wilkinson said. "We will be back up to seven this weekend and my expectation with this young group is to just focus on the basics, and get better with every game."
McDermitt travels to Battle Mountain on Friday and Saturday for the Longhorn Invitational.
