One of the best rivalries in the Division IV East, saw its latest battle take place on Friday, Feb. 13, in McDermitt.
The Lady Bulldogs closed out the regular season by hosting Eureka. The two schools have been near the top of the league standings for the past couple of years.
McDermitt started off quickly, holding Eureka to three points in the first quarter, but the Vandals used a strong second and third quarter to capture a 36-34 victory.
The Lady Bulldogs used a strong defensive effort to lead 9-3 after the first eight minutes of play, only to see the Vandals cut the deficit to three points, 14-14 at halftime.
The difference in the contest was the third quarter, as Eureka came out of the break and outscored McDermitt 15-4 to go in front 29-21. The Lady Bulldogs came back with a furious rally in the fourth quarter, but came up two points short.
It was the first league loss for McDermitt on the floor, but the school found out on Tuesday, it would have to forfeit five games in the Division IV East, due to playing an ineligible player from Jan. 23 - Feb. 13. The forfeitures knocked down the Lady Bulldogs from the first seed in the Division IV East to the No. 4 seed.
The Division IV Regional Championships began Thursday in Spring Creek, with McDermitt taking on Smith Valley in the quarterfinals. Results were not available at press time. The two schools played earlier in the year, with Smith Valley winning.
If the Lady Bulldogs avenged the loss, they will play either Owyhee or Virginia City today at 3 p.m. at Spring Creek High School. The championship game is set for 1 p.m., also at Spring Creek High School.
Other quarterfinal games on Thursday included Eureka against Mineral County and Pyramid Lake versus Wells.
Pahranagat Valley and Lund and Sandy Valley and Round Mountain are playing in the semifinals of the Division IV Sourth Regional Championship.
The top two teams advance to the NIAA State Championships to be played at the Orleans Arena on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
