Lady Bulldogs knock off Railroaders for first Division IV East win of season

MCDERMITT - The McDermitt High School volleyball team got back on the winning track this past Saturday with a hard-fought four-set victory over Carlin in McDermitt.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in the Division IV East.

McDermitt raced to an early advantage in the opening set, scoring six of the first nine points, which included an ace by Va Draunidalo and a block by Deandra Dave. However, the Railroaders went on an 11-1 run to go in front 14-7.

Dave ended the spurt with a tip and later had an ace to get the Lady Bulldogs back in the set. Two kills later in the set by Draunidalo brought it even to 16-16 and her ace gave McDermitt the lead back at 18-17. The lead switched hands on two more occasions, when Dave gave the Lady Bulldogs the lead for good with a kill and Dave closed out the set with another kill.

Carlin took the early advantage in the second set, picking up six of the first nine points. The momentum shifted with two aces by Krissy Long that propelled McDermitt to a 9-7 lead and forcing a timeout by the Railroaders.

The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as six points at 14-8 and were up 22-19 after a kill by Long and an ace by Draunidalo. Carlin rallied to tie the set at 23-23, but was called for being in the net on the next point, giving the Lady Bulldogs set point. McDermitt did score the next point to take a 2-0 lead.

After four ties in the beginning of the third set, the last at 10-10, Carlin used a 10-1 run to take control of the set and never looked back. McDermitt closed within 21-14, only to see Carlin score four of the next five points.

Carlin appeared to run with that momentum and led 13-3 in the fourth set. But, McDermitt fought is way back and trailing 14-7, scored the next 14 points with Lydia Northrup serving. Northrup had four aces in that stretch and Draunidalo added a kill to put the Lady Bulldogs up 21-14. The Railroaders never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

McDermitt steps out of league play for its next two matches, starting with a road trip to Virginia City on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start. The Lady Bulldogs are back on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 30, to play Crane, Ore, at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
