Lady Bulldogs fall to Vandals to close out regular season

Wilkinson scores 21 points for McDermitt

WINNEMUCCA - The battle for second place in the Division IV East was up for grabs on Friday, Feb. 5, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team played host to rival Eureka.

The Lady Bulldogs enjoyed a 60-46 victory over the Vandals last month, in Eureka and were looking to complete the season sweep of their rivals.

McDermitt held a slim one-point lead at halftime but ran into foul trouble in the second half as Eureka pulled away for a 50-40 win and claiming the No. 2 seed for the Division IV Regional Championships that started yesterday in Reno.

McDermitt (14-7 overall, 7-3 Division IV East) was whistled for 28 fouls on the night with Lydia Northrup, Va Draunidalo, Andrea Smart and Cheyenne Urban fouling out.

Senior Staheli Wilkinson had a season-high 21 points in her last game in the McDermitt gym. Wilkinson also had six steals and four assists.

She recently became the second-leading assist leader in Nevada history for girls basketball with 606. Durango's Lindy LaRocque is the all-time leader with 794. Wilkinson recently passed Pahrump Valley's Darla Hopkins, who had 582.

Eureka grabbed a one-point lead in a low-scoring first quarter that saw the teams combine for just nine points. The Lady Bulldogs rallied to take to take the advantage at halftime, only to see the Vandals pull away in the second half.

After scoring just 16 points in the first half, Eureka broke out for 18 points in the third period to lead 34-29. As the Lady Bulldogs got into foul trouble, the Vandals hit free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.

Playing in her final home game as well, Sharon Sherburn posted a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds. Draunidalo added four points and Northrup three. Urban did not score but contributed eight rebounds and two steals.

McDermitt began play in the Division IV North Regional Championships on Thursday in Reno at Bishop Manogue High School. The Lady Bulldogs took on Virginia City and results were not available at press time.

If McDermitt won, it would play the winner of Wells and Coleville today at 3 p.m. at North Valleys High School in Reno. The championship is noon on Saturday.
