Lady Bulldogs collect two road wins over league opponents

McDermitt hosts Eureka tonight

WINNEMUCCA - The McDermitt High School girls basketball team accomplished what it needed to this past weekend to stay in contention for the second seed in the Division IV East for the upcoming regional tournament in Reno.

The Lady Bulldogs (14-6 overall, 7-2 Division IV East) defeated Carlin 56-31 on Friday, Feb. 1, on the Railroaders' home floor and followed that with a 72-15 rout on Saturday afternoon against rival Owyhee.

The two road triumphs set up a fight for second place in the league tonight as McDermitt hosts Eureka at 6 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Vandals 60-46 on Friday, Jan. 18, in Eureka.

"It's a huge game on Friday night," said MHS head coach Jaimi Wilkinson. "It's one of those games that if you can't get up for it you have no business playing the sport. With my youth, I am going to focus on eight minutes at a time. I need to remind the girls we need to win quarters. We must win the battle of the boards and not give Eureka too many looks inside the paint."

In the win over Carlin, Lydia Northrup and Andrea Smart, a pair of freshmen, led McDermitt with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Senior, Staheli Wilkinson also added 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

McDermitt jumped out to a 13-4 advantage over Carlin in the first quarter and led by 13 points at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs put the contest out of reach with an 18-7 spurt in the fourth quarter.

Senior Sharon Sherburn netted nine points, Deandra Dave four, Cheyenne Urban three and Va Draunidalo two.

McDermitt was never challenged by Owyhee, outscoring the Braves 26-4 in the opening eight minutes of play. The Lady Bulldogs increased the advantage to 47-9 at halftime and the game was played with a running clock after McDermitt made the opening bucket of the second half.

McDermitt outscored Owyhee 12-0 in the third period and the Braves did not score more than six points in any quarter.

After hosting Eureka tonight, McDermitt steps out of conference play on Saturday afternoon to face Round Mountain at 3:30 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Reno next week for the Division IV North Regional Championships. First round games will be played Thursday at either Galena or Bishop Manogue high schools. The semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday will be held at North Valleys High School.

The top two teams from the regional tournament advance to the state championships at Chaparral High School and the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
