Lady Bucks win two of seven matches to begin season

Lowry hosts State Farm Invite this weekend

WINNEMUCCA - It was an up and down two days for the Lowry High School varsity volleyball team as it opened its season last weekend at the Yerington Invitational, which featured 20 teams from northern Nevada and California.

The Lady Bucks won two of three matches in pool play on Friday, Aug. 24, defeating Coleville, Calif., 25-10 and 25-18 and Sparks 25-23 and 25-14. In between those two matches, the Lady Bucks lost 25-15 and 25-17 to Yerington.

"We were up and down like a yo-yo," said LHS head coach Bob Rice. "We got off to quick start against Yerington and had them in a hole but we just missed a bunch of serves the rest of the match. We missed a lot of serves on the weekend. We haven't played a lot together yet. Our passing was off a little bit and we need to push the ball up a little bit. We were starting our offense at the 10-foot line and making our setters run all over. We wore our setters out."

Lowry (2-5) went winless in bracket play on Saturday, beginning with a 25-13 and 25-15 loss to Churchill County. The Greenwave ended the Lady Bucks' season a year ago, defeating them in the regional playoffs.

Lowry started off slowly against Fernley, losing the first set 25-12, before bouncing back to win set two 26-24. The Vaqueros came back to win the third set 15-10.

"I don't know what happened in that first set," Rice said. "Every time we played we had to referee the match before. We had four or five girls wrapped up in doing books or line judging. We never had a chance to get warmed up. We got off to a pretty slow start for much of Saturday."

The Lady Bucks started slowly once again in a 25-11 and 25-18 loss to Dayton and Lowry finished the tournament with a 25-17 and 25-20 loss to South Tahoe.

"It was a learning experience and now we know where we need to focus," Rice said. "We are going to fix some things. We got to see a lot of the teams that we will play in our league."

Lowry makes its home debut today and Saturday as it hosts the State Farm Invitational. The Lady Bucks are scheduled to play Fernley today at 11:30 a.m., Middleton, Idaho, at 3 p.m. and North Tahoe at 4:15 p.m. Saturday's action gets under way at 9 a.m. in both gyms.
