WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School girls soccer team embarked on its longest road trip of the year for the end of the regular season, with matches in Ely and West Wendover last week.
The Lady Bucks tied White Pine 0-0 on Thursday, Oct. 25, and bounced back on Friday, Oct. 26, with a 10-1 victory over West Wendover.
"I was pleased with the way we played in the last two matches," said LHS head coach Chris Entwistle. "It wasn't as good as we hoped. We dominated the play against White Pine but just could not get the ball into the net. We have had trouble finishing our shots all year and that continues to be something we struggle with."
Lowry and White Pine dealt with a number of weather conditions on the field, including snow, wind and even sunny weather at times.
Playing on the fast field turf surface in Ely, the Lady Bucks allowed the Bobcats to have just one shot on goal, which was stopped by goalkeeper Savannah Ingram.
"We controlled the possession and had the better opportunities," Entwistle said. "The weather was all over the place and wasn't ideal. The girls played through it and played well."
The coach praised Martha Vizcarra and Rikki Hamilton for their defensive play.
Allison Walker gave Lowry its best chance at scoring, but her shot was stopped by the White Pine goalkeeper.
"I will give all credit in the world to their goalkeeper," Entwistle added. "As a goalkeeper in college, I would have had a tough time saving it. She was in the right place in the right time. It was a one in a million save."
Walker's shot was a laser beam off the turf that the Bobcats' goalkeeper got a hand on it and deflected into her body. She was eventually able to clear the ball out of the net.
Lowry had 11 shots on goal, three each by Irdiana Sapien and Monique Rodriguez. Alyssa Jones got off two shots and freshman Maddie Mayo had a shot that bounced off the crossbar.
The Lady Bucks (8-9-3 overall, 2-7-1 Division I-A, 6-3-1 Ruby Mountain League) had a much easier time with West Wendover.
Maddie Mitch and Rodriguez each picked up a hat trick with three goals apiece. Mitch scored two of the first four goals for the Lady Bucks, who had a total of 48 shots in the match.
Lowry led 5-1 at halftime and broke the match open with five more goals in the final 40 minutes of play. West Wendover scored its only goal on a penalty kick.
"Monique scored 15 goals last year and came into the (West Wendover) match with 14," added the coach. "We were trying to get her a couple of goals, so she could better her total from last year. She ended up getting a hat trick and finished with 17 goals on the season."
Sapien added two goals for the Lady Bucks and Ashley McKinnon and Walker each scored one goal. Anna Davis picked up two assists for Lowry.
The Lady Bucks reached the Division I-A Regional Tournament as the No. 8 seed and lost to 6-0 Elko on Wednesday. The Indians led 2-0 at halftime and slowly pulled away in the second half.
Lowry was further up in the standings, but Sparks High School was forced to forfeit a number of it matches, allowing other schools to leap frog the Lady Bucks in the standings.
