WINNEMUCCA - After suffering a one-goal loss at Fernley to begin last week, the season all but started over for the Lowry High School girls soccer team on Saturday in Winnemucca.
Sitting with just one Division I-A North win in five opportunities, the Lady Bucks played host to Dayton, a squad who came into the game winless in league play.
Lowry got back on the winning track with a dominating 8-0 victory, in which the Dust Devils did not have one shot on goal the entire day. The Lady Bucks possessed the ball for much of the game, with Lowry goalie Lindsay Pate playing the ball just a couple of times.
"We knew if we got off to a good start we would be OK," said LHS head coach Chris Entwistle. "We weren't taking anything for granted, especially after the Fernley loss. Dayton was a team that beat us last year. We played well and were composed the entire match. It was a good chance to get Lindsay some time in goal even though she didn't see a lot of action. It is good to have another goalie ready to go if needed."
Lowry (2-4 Division I-A North, 5-4-1 overall) saw two of its freshmen account for four points in the first half of play. Alyssa Campbell assisted on the first goal of the day in the third minute as she passed to junior Monique Rodriguez, who found the back of the net.
Four minutes later, Rodriguez connected with freshman Audrey Snow, who broke through the Dayton defense for a 2-0 advantage. Senior Cindy Bravo got into the scoring act in the 16th minute after taking a pass from Maddie Mayo to make the score 3-0. In the 27th minute, Bridget Cervantes took a crossing pass from Ashley McKinnon near the box and the junior found the back of the net. The freshmen duo of Campbell and Snow struck again as Campbell passed to a running Snow, who did the rest and got a shot passed the Dayton goalie for a 5-0 lead at halftime.
"We have some nice young players coming up," Entwistle. "We have three freshmen that contribute for us every time we go out on the field. They are gaining experience in each game they play."
Rodriguez picked up her second goal of the day 12 minutes into the second half and the Lady Bucks scored their final two goals in a minute stretch.
In the 72nd minute, McKinnon took a pass from Allison Walker and found the net with the aid of a Dayton defender who kicked into her own net trying to clear the ball. A minute later, Walker crossed the ball into the box and Megan Lombardi put the ball into the net for the final goal of the day.
"We really put ourselves behind the eight-ball with that loss to Fernley," added the coach. "We came out and pushed hard and it was the first step back for the rest of our season."
Lowry is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Spring Creek on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Lady Bucks hit the road on Saturday to play Elko at 1 p.m. and are back at home on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to play Fernley at 2 p.m.
"This is a big week for us and we have to come out and play hard," Entwistle said. "If we want a chance at the playoffs we need to come out and get wins against Spring Creek and Elko. We have to push every game and score as many points as we can."
