WINNEMUCCA - After a bump in the road last Saturday to Truckee, the Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team jumped back on the winning track Tuesday in Winnemucca.
The Lady Bucks (13-6 overall, 6-1 Division I-A, 1-0 Ruby Mountain) defeated Spring Creek 25-15 and 25-21 in the first Ruby Mountain League match for Lowry.
"It was a good way to bounce back from the loss to Truckee," said LHS head coach Megan Allen. "The girls played well. I think we may have been a little over confident in the second set, and we had to battle back for the win. We gave Spring Creek a lot of points with missed serves. We probably served 70 percent on the night and we are usually a good serving team."
The loss to Truckee was the first since Sept. 1, when the Lady Bucks played in a State Farm varsity tournament.
Carly Bell opened the first set with an ace for Lowry, and Payton Naveran provided a kill, giving the Lady Bucks a 5-3 advantage. The Spartans battled back for a 12-9 lead, when Lowry rattled off seven consecutive points, which included a kill by Darion Iturriaga, a tip by Jasmyne Herrera and two aces by Ashlee Barron.
Lowry continued to pull away, with kills from Auri Criddle and Meg Montero and an ace by Iturriaga en route to the 10-point victory.
The Lady Bucks scored three of the first four points of the second set with the help of an ace by Bell and a tip into the open floor by Criddle. However, Spring Creek rallied for a 10-7 lead, forcing Lowry to call a timeout.
The Spartans scored the next two points out of the break, when Lowry slowly reeled in the deficit. Barron and Bell each picked up an ace, with Criddle providing a kill in between to cut the Spring Creek lead to 14-12.
Chelsea Herrera's block tied the set at 15-15 and Lowry took the lead for good at 20-18 on an ace by Iturriaga. The Lady Bucks clinched the match with a block by Chelsea Herrera.
Criddle led Lowry with four assists and three kills. Iturriaga had a team-high six digs and three aces to go with one kill. Jasmyne Herrera, Naveran and Barron each had two kills and Barron and Bell added two aces apiece. Chelsea Herrera finished with three blocks and Barron and Bell had four and three digs, respectively.
Lowry travels to Battle Mountain on Saturday for a noon match with the Longhorns and are back on the road Tuesday to face Elko at 5 p.m.
