WINNEMUCCA - With its playoff chances gone, the Lowry High School varsity girls soccer team is looking to close out the season by playing for pride.
When the Lady Bucks traveled to Truckee in the first week of September, the Wolverines won 7-0. It was the most lopsided loss for Lowry on the season.
Nearly two months later, the Lady Bucks were looking to show the Wolverines how much they have improved. Lowry trailed just 2-1 in its match on Thursday, Oct. 24, but saw Truckee tack on two more goals to win 4-1.
"The girls came out really well," said LHS head coach Chris Entwistle. "This was the only team that really smoked us this year. We did the math. We are not in the playoffs but let's play with heart. We were not going to let them leave our home field by walking all over of us. We wanted to show them what kind of a team we are now."
Truckee picked up goals by Sophie Warren and Tessa Manahan in the first half. Lowry kept it close in the first 40 minutes, as Monique Rodriguez scored off a corner kick by Bridget Cervantes.
The Wolverines put the game out of reach in the second half with a pair of goals.
Lindsay Pate had 12 saves for the Lady Bucks.
"We had our opportunities," added the coach. "They picked up a pair of quality goals to stretch it out. It made realize as a program we need to do something sooner. The Truckees, South Tahoes, Elkos and Churchill Countys are playing year round. They stick with one or two sports. It takes us about a month to get going. We need to get going sooner. We have been competitive with everyone we have played this year."
Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bucks host Elko today at 4 p.m.
"Even though we are not in the playoffs, we have nothing to lose in our last couple of games," Entwistle said.
