WINNEMUCCA - After suffering just its second loss to a JV squad this year on Tuesday, Oct. 9, to Elko, the Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team bounced back with home wins over White Pine and West Wendover this past weekend.
The Lady Bucks defeated the Bobcats 25-10, 22-25 and 15-6 on Friday and easily dispatched of the Wolverines, 25-12 and 25-13 on Saturday afternoon.
In the win over West Wendover, Carly Bell got Lowry off to a quick start, with a kill and ace for the first two points of the first set. That was a premonition of how the rest of the match went.
Auri Criddle served three consecutive aces to give the Lady Bucks a 10-2 advantage. The run with Criddle serving continued to 13-2, after a kill by Payton Naveran that forced West Wendover to call a timeout.
It didn't get much better for the Wolverines after the stoppage of play, as the Lady Bucks maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the set. West Wendover closed with seven points at 14-7, but Lowry countered with six straight points, including a kill by Ashlee Barron and two aces by Meg Montero.
Jasmyne Herrera, Darion Iturriaga and Criddle all added kills late in the set, with Criddle's shot in the open floor, giving Lowry the win.
The Lady Bucks (16-7 overall, 6-2 Division I-A, 4-1 Ruby Mountain) struggled to keep the momentum going at the start of the second set. The Wolverines took advantage of Lowry errors to take the early lead.
An ace by Jillian Albright tied the set at 8-8 and the Lady Bucks took the lead for good at 10-9 on a kill by Iturriaga. Perkinson followed with two straight aces and Criddle finished off the 6-0 run with a kill, stretching the advantage to 15-9.
On the strength of consecutive aces by Bell, Lowry increased its lead to 18-11 and later closed out the match with seven straight points. In that final run, Sierra Thiede had two kills and Criddle a kill and the match-winning ace.
The Lady Bucks took advantage of West Wendover's struggling defense, with 15 aces in the match. Criddle had four aces, Albright and Bell three each and Naveran and Perkinson two apiece.
Thiede led Lowry with three kills, while Naveran and Criddle finished with two each. Lindsay Pate, Iturriaga, Herrera and Barron each had one kill. Six different players had one dig for the Lady Bucks and Albright led the team with six assists.
It was an up-and-down match for Lowry against White Pine. The Lady Bucks dominated the first set and won by 15 points. However, the Bobcats rallied to claim set two, forcing Lowry to win the match in three.
Herrera was dominant at the net for Lowry with five kills. Naveran had a team-high four aces, with Montero adding three kills. Naveran also had a team-high three blocks, while Chelsea Herrera, Thiede and Albright had one block apiece. Pate and Iturriaga had four and three digs, respectively, and Albright finished with 15 assists.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek tonight for a 5 p.m. start and returns home on Thursday to play Battle Mountain at 5 p.m.
