After having a pair of matches canceled last week due to dense smoke coming into Nevada from the King Fire in California, the Lowry High School girls soccer team had 10 days in between matches.
The Lady Bucks were back on the field Tuesday night in Elko to take on one of its top rivals in the Division I-A North. The last time the two schools was last November in Elko and they played to a 1-1 tie.
Some players between both teams have changed, but the outcome was the same with a little more scoring. The Lady Bucks overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second half to earn a 2-2 tie. Lowry is now 1-1-1 in the Division I-A North and 2-2-2 overall. The two rivals played to a 1-1 tie during the Spring Creek Jamboree at the start of the year in a preseason tournament.
"I thought we played pretty well," said LHS coach Melanie Rasor. "We controlled the ball well and maintained the possession. I thought we outworked them and were in better shape and making them get up the field."
Elko grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the first half and held that margin through the first 40 minutes of play. The Indians netted a second goal in the early part of the second half to go up 2-0.
Lowry began its comeback when senior Monique Rodriguez scored off a corner kick. The ball bounced off Audrey Snow and Alyssa Jones, before Rodriguez finished off the goal.
Junior Caitlynn Cooper netted the equalizing goal on a shot from about 25 yards out.
"It was a nice shot," Rasor said. "She put in the top corner of the net and it was a shot no goalie was going to stop."
Lowry had the advantage in the final 10 minutes as a Elko player was given a red card. The Lady Bucks extended the pressure from there but could not get the winning goal through the net.
"We still have to finish better," Rasor said. "We are leaving goals out on the field. Still, I think this is a team that we can play with and beat. We did well coming back and getting the tie. When some teams get down, they don't do well playing from behind. If we can get in front and get the first goal, we can play different."
Lowry will attempt to make its home debut once again on Saturday against Fernley at 10 a.m. The Lady Bucks' original home-opener was canceled on Thursday, Sept. 18, against Sparks.[[In-content Ad]]
