WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team proved once again that it is the team to beat in the Division I-A North with a pair of wins last week.
The Lady Bucks (6-0 Division I-A North, 10-1 overall), defeated Churchill County 25-20 and 25-21 in Fallon on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Lowry returned home on Friday night and beat South Tahoe 25-16 and 25-22.
In the matchup with Churchill County, Hannah Hillyer had four kills, one ace and one block for the Lady Bucks. Ashlee Barron added two kills and one ace, Madison Lozano three kills and one block and Brooklyn Waller had three assists and two aces. Alanna Miller and Kaity Sample had three assists and two kills, respectively, and Madison Montero had one block.
Lowry head coach Cassie Jenkins noted the play of libero Olivia Silva for her work in the back row. The coach added that Silva was able to dig a number of hard down balls.
In the win over South Tahoe on Friday night, Hannah Hillyer started off the night with a kill as Lowry did not trail during any part of the night. A pair of kills by Montero and Lozano kept the Lady Bucks' advantage at three points at 8-5.
Lowry maintained that same three-point lead at 10-7, when it went on 8-3 run to break open the set. It was the first match for the Lady Bucks and their new offense.
"We ran a new rotation of 5-1 instead of a 6-2," Jenkins said. "It put Alanna in as a defensive specialist, which was a nice addition to the defense."
The Lady Bucks scored six of the first seven points of the second set, with four of those points coming off three aces and a kill by Barron. Leading 14-11, Lowry pulled out to a nine-point advantage with six consecutive points. During that run, Hillyer had a kill, Sample a tip in the open South Tahoe floor, a kill by Silva and an ace by Barron.
Lowry led 24-14 late in the match, only to see the Vikings make it interesting with eight points in a row to cut the deficit to 24-22. However, Hillyer ended the South Tahoe rally with a kill to end the match.
"We played pretty well," Jenkins said. "We made it closer than it should have been in the second game."
Barron had four kills and four aces for the Lady Bucks, while Montero and Lozano added four kills and three kills, respectively. Hillyer had three kills, Silva nine digs and one ace, Waller 12 assists, Sample one ace and Miller one kill.
Lowry also got a boost with the addition of Chelsea Herrera, who was back in the lineup after having surgery at the start of the season.
"It is good to welcome her back," added the coach. "We are excited to have her back on the court with us."
Lowry is back at home tonight to play Elko at 5 p.m.
