Lady Bucks JV volleyball team earns runner-up finish in Truckee

Lowry features seven freshmen

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team began its season with a runner-up finish at a tournament in Truckee last Saturday.

The Lady Bucks, who are comprised of seven freshmen and three sophomores, went 4-1 on the day. Lowry raced out of the gate to beat Dayton 25-9 and 25-9 and Incline by the identical scores of 25-9 and 25-9.

"For a pretty young team, I thought we played well," said LHS head coach Cassie Jenkins. "As a coach they are fun to coach. They are already a good team that knows the fundamentals. They move together on the court very well and the camaraderie is great. They are always positive, even when they are behind in a match. They showed some good attributes for being just their first week of matches. That is what will carry them through the season."

In the semifinals, Lowry knocked off the host Wolverines in two sets, before taking on Churchill County in the championship. The Greenwave squeaked out the victory 32-30, 20-25 and 15-12.

"We had our chances to win the championship," Jenkins said. "We had set point four different times in the first set. We just couldn't close it out. Serving errors really hurt us. We came back strong in the second set but couldn't keep the momentum going. We started off slow and dug ourselves in a hole in the third set. We fought hard at the end, but the deficit was too big to overcome."

The Lowry JV squad includes Kylie Hillbish, Chelsea Herrera, Brooklyn Waller, Madison Montero, Olivia Silva, Ashlee Barron, Madison Lozano, Alanna Miller, Hannah Hillyer, Kaitlyn Sample.

Lowry makes its home debut tonight at 5 p.m. and travel to Fernley on Saturday for a noon start.[[In-content Ad]]
