WINNEMUCCA - Two weeks ago when the Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team visited Elko, some thought the sqaud got a raw deal in the final outcome.
The Lady Bucks dropped just its second JV match of the season in the loss to the Indians on Oct. 9.
The two rival schools met up for the second time on Tuesday night in Winnemucca, and Lowry took out its frustrations in a 25-21 and 25-12 victory.
Lowry improved to 19-7 overall, 8-2 in the Division I-A and 7-1 in the Ruby Mountain League.
"We came out with some authority tonight," said LHS head coach Megan Allen. "The girls were upset from the first time they played Elko. They wanted to send a message and it was a complete team effort tonight."
Decked out in pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness, the Lady Bucks scored the first 10 points of the match on the serving of Carly Bell. Bell had two aces in that stretch, but Lowry was also hitting the ball well. Payton Naveran had two kills and a block, and Meg Montero added a kill during the run.
The Indians did not quit and rebounded as they closed the gap to three points at 15-12 with a 12-5 run. A kill by Auri Criddle put Lowry up by four points at 16-12, but Elko battled back and took its first lead of the set at 18-17.
The advantage was short-lived, with Elko missing a serve on the next point and Naveran and Montero followed with kills to up the Lowry lead to 20-18.
The Indians tied the set at 20-20, when Bell picked up a dig on an Elko hit that went back over the net and into the open floor on the Indians' side. Bell and Naveran followed with kills to close out the set.
"We started off great and let them come back," Allen said. "The girls figured it out and it was good for us to win that first set."
It was déjà vu in the second set, with Lowry scoring the first four points. The front-row hitting of Naveran and Montero continued to give the Indians trouble, with the duo knocking down consecutive kills to make the score 11-3.
Later in the set, Naveran had a kill and ace in consecutive points and Jasmyne Herrera and Sierra Thiede closed out the match with kills.
"Our goal was to just keep scoring points and not let Elko have a chance at being in the game," Allen said. "I was proud of how our girls played."
Naveran led the Lady Bucks with nine kills to go with two aces, one block and one dig. Kelsea Perkinson finished with two kills and one block. Jillian Albright had nine assists, Thiede three digs and one block and Darion Iturriaga, Bell and Ashlee Barron each had two digs.
Lowry traveled to Ely on Thursday to play White Pine and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bucks close out the season on Friday with an 11 a.m. match in West Wendover.
