The Lowry High School girls track and field team continues to produce strong performances as the season heads to spring break.
The Lady Bucks were in Fallon last Saturday for the Fallon Elks Invitational and finished sixth out of 18 teams with 54 points. McQueen and Galena of the Division I North were first and second with 102 and 89 points, respectively. Truckee was third with 84 points, Reed (83) was fourth and Spring Creek (55) fifth.
Sophomore Kenadee Jeppsen won the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet. She also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.42 seconds as she was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 6 inches.
Hailey Hinkle had another strong outing in her freshman campaign, placing third in the 300-meter hurdles at 50.22. She added a sixth-place finish in the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:50.96 and Hinkle was 10th in the high jump with a mark of 4-8.
Junior Jillian Albright was fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.98, while freshmen teammates Shelby Garrison (1:05.28) and Kepa Bengochea (1:06.14) were eighth and 13th in the race. Senior Monique Rodriguez turned in a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.54.
Madison Montero finished ninth in the pole vault, clearing 8-0 and the sophomore was 11th in the 200 meters in a time of 28.04, while Audrey Snow was 14th in the 200 meters at 28.29.
The 4x400 relay of Bengochea, Hinkle, Garrison and Albright were third in a time of 4:17.30. Truckee (4:12.17) won the race, while McQueen was second at 4:14.29.
The 4x100 relay of Bengochea, Rodriguez, Montero and Snow were fifth with a time of 53.30, but second among Division I-A North schools. McQueen, Reed and Galena claimed the top three spots, while Dayton was fourth by .20 seconds over Lowry.
The 4x200 relay of Rodriguez, Snow, Montero and Garrison were also fifth in a time of 1:52.49. McQueen won the race at 1:47.04, while Dayton beat out the Lady Bucks by just .09 seconds for fourth.
On the boys side, Jared Carrica scored the lone team point for the Buckaroos, finishing eighth in the shot put with a throw of 43-8.75. Bryan Terry was 11th in the discus with a toss of 110-6 and Hayden Jeppsen finished 17th in the 3,200 meters at 11:06.
Kelvin Meza (55.31) and Jed Teichert (56.47) were 19th and 25th, respectively in the 400 meters, while Alan Mayorga finished 22nd in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.13. Omar Aranjo placed 29th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.60 and Michael Wing was 30th in the 200 meters at 25.34.
Liam Gallups finished 32nd in the in the 300-meter hurdles (1:09.10) and he was 36th in the 1,600 meters at 12:42.
The 4x100 relay of Meza, Mayorga, Wing and Roberto Sanchez were ninth in a time of 48.30.
McQueen won the team title with 145 points, Reed was second at 100 and Dayton (95), the defending Division I-A state champion, was third. Galena (58) and Churchill County (48) rounded out the top five.
Lowry took another group of athletes to the High Desert Frosh/Soph Invitational this past Friday at McQueen High School in Reno.
Melanie Martinez and Shandra Smith were fourth and sixth in the 400 meters with times of 72.9 and 73.6. Martinez also placed ninth in the 100 meters at 14.7, while Smith was 12th at 15.0.
Odessa Pearrow placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-6, while finishing 13th in the shot put and discus. Jaris Dunyon was ninth in the high jump with a mark of 3-10, while the sophomore was 12th in the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. Alyssa Brown finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 21-8 and Anahi Munoz was 14th in the discus at 47-2.
Reno claimed the team title with 200 points, McQueen was second at 114 and Truckee (96) was third
Lowry was ninth as a team with 12 points..
For the Buckaroo boys, Zach White led the way with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 9-6. In addition, he had a mark of 5-2 in the high jump to finish fifth and the sophomore was seventh in the triple jump at 34-8.50.
Erick Lopez turned in pair of ninth-place finishes in the 200 meters (24.90) and the 400 meters (57.50). Ryan Bourland was ninth in the pole vault at 8-6 and Kyle Lovell and James Dunyon were 17th and 18th, respectively, in the 200 meters and 100 meters.
The 4x200 relay of Jackson Brown, Jose Vera, Dunyon and Lopez were fourth with a time of 1:45.30.
McQueen ran away with the team title with 168 points, Reno was second at 118 and Reed (108.50) was third.
Lowry finished eight as a team with 17 points, as there were just three Division I-A North schools that competed including Truckee and Sparks.
The Buckaroos are off this week and return to action on Saturday, April 11, at the Elko Invitational.
