The Lowry High School cross country team was one the few sports that did not see a cancellation last week due to the King Fire near Sacramento, Calif.

The Buckaroos competed in the Dayton Invitational last Friday and made the best of it. The Lowry girls finished third with 68 points, while Fernley (23) and Churchill County (55) were first and second, respectively.

The underclassmen duo of Charice Brown and Emily Jock paced the Buckaroo girls. Brown, a sophomore, finished fifth with a time of 24 minutes, 11 seconds and Jock was ninth at 25:45.

Churchill County freshman Chloe Overlie won with a time of 22:44 and Fernley's Grace DeLeon (22:59) was second. Dayton's Sydney Strickler (23:25) placed third and Ferley's Maibrie Campbell was fifth at 23:47.

Haley Weber made it three Lowry runners in the top 20, finishing 20th with a time of 27:38. The final four Lady Buckaroo runners were bunched together starting with Shannon Munk (30:50) in 31st. Amanda Brandon was 34th at 31:35, and Camryn Maher (32:37) and Alexandria Ziemer (35:57) were 36th and 37th, respectively.

"Charice and Emily ran very well," said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. "What I was pleased about was the other girls finishing together. Now, we just need them to move up a little bit."

On the boys side, Lowry finished fifth with 92 points. Churchill County won the close team battle with 75 points and Silver Stage was second at 79. Fernley (82) placed fourth and Dayton (87) was fifth.

Sophomore Kobe Fitzpatrick led Lowry, finishing 14th at 19:52. Hayden Jeppsen (20:06) was 16th, Ethan Andrews (20:19( was 18th and Devin Morris was the fourth runner in the top 20 at 20th with a time of 20:30.

"Kobe and Hayden got tripped up and off to a bad start," Norcutt said. "That was a little rough, but they recovered and finished well. If you look at it, it was pretty close in the team standings."

Devin Dowd (21:30) and Chanse McAllister (21:39) were 31st and 32nd, respectively, and Jonathan Madrid was 38th at 22:15. Christopher Kearns (22:32) was 40th, Omar Aranjo (22:57) was 43rd and Liam Gallups finished 64th with a time of 25:32. Mathew Jock (26:30) and Hunter Albisu (27:36) were 67th and 72nd.

"The boys are starting to get the finishing together thing under their belt," said the coach. "We are getting better every week and the times are coming down and that is all I can ask for as a coach. It was good to see them help each other and encourage them to pass. It's anybody's game right now."

Lowry competed in the Fernley Invitational on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos travel to Boise, Idaho, on Saturday for the Bob Firman Invitational.[[In-content Ad]]
