Lady Bucks fall to South Tahoe in soccer semifinals

Lowry finishes year at 9-8-3

In a matter of three weeks, the Lowry High School girls soccer team went from not looking like it would make the playoffs to one of the hottest squads in the Division I-A North.

The Lady Bucks won five of their last six matches to leap over Churchill County and Elko to earn the fourth seed and a spot in the postseason after missing out in 2013.

Lowry had a tough task in the regional semifinals last Friday in Truckee, in taking on South Tahoe, the defending state champion. The Vikings won both regular season meetings, the last coming on Oct. 14 in a 3-0 victory in South Tahoe.

The Vikings opened up the scoring in the 14th minute on a goal by Annie Brejc. She also added a second goal in the first half to give South Tahoe a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Maia Bickert and junior Grace Schouten scored goals in the first 15 minutes after the second half to account for the final score.

In the championship match on Saturday, Truckee beat South Tahoe 3-2. Both teams advanced to the state championships this weekend in Henderson.

Lowry finished the season at 9-8-3 and loses five seniors due to graduation.
