Lady Bucks crush Dust Devils in series sweep

Lowry outscores Dayton 72-0

If you look at the results from last weekend's series the Lowry High School softball team played, it would resemble a football score instead of a softball contest.

The Lady Bucks had little trouble with the Dust Devils, outscoring the Lyon County school 72-0 in a three-game sweep. Lowry won the opener 27-0 on Friday, March 28, and swept a doubleheader 22-0 and 23-0 on Saturday.

The Lady Bucks improved to 8-1 in the Division I-A North and 11-2 overall. Lowry is second in the league, while Fernley is first at 7-0 and Churchill County is third at 7-1. Elko sits in fourth at 6-4, with Lowry sweeping the Indians earlier this season.

The top four teams advance to the regional championships in Dayton on Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9. The state tournament will be played in southern Nevada from May 14-16 at a site to be determined.

In the series opener, the senior and freshman combination of Alyssa Dendary and Alyssa Kuskie held Dayton to just one hit, which came in the second inning. Dendary (7-2) started and picked up the victory in four innings of work. She struck out three and walked one, while allowing one hit. Kuskie threw a perfect fifth inning, striking out one batter.

After being set down in order in the first inning, it was all Lowry from there. The Lady Bucks scored six times in the second inning. Kylee McClellan led off the frame with a double and scored after Stevie DeStout reached base on an error by the catcher. Kuskie and Alyssa Jones singled and tripled, respectively, to add to the lead and McClellan picked up her second hit of the inning to close out the rally.

Lowry added to the advantage in the third inning with four runs, which included a two-RBI double by Ashlee Barron. Jones also drove in a run with a base hit.
