With a little help just a few miles away in western Nevada, the Lowry High School girls basketball team was able to open up a two-game lead in the Division I-A North this past weekend.
The Lady Bucks (10-0 Division I-A North, 15-4 overall) went on the road and defeated South Tahoe 40-22 on Friday, Feb. 23, and Dayton 53-17 on Saturday afternoon.
Lowry picked up help from Churchill County on Saturday as the Greenwave beat Elko 51-48 in Fallon. Both Churchill County and Elko are 8-2 in the Division I-A North.
South Tahoe and Spring Creek are tied for fourth in the league at 5-5, withj one team losing out on a playoff berth at the end of the regular season.
In the win against South Tahoe, Alyssa Dendary scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the first quarter to help Lowry build a 15-10 lead. The offenses for both squads disappeared in the second quarter with a combined four points. The Vikings went without a field goal in the eight-minute stretch and the Lady Bucks held and 18-11 advantage at halftime.
Lowry increased the margin by three points in the third quarter and put the game out of reach with an 11-3 run in the final eight minutes of play.
Nine different players scored for Lowry, with Payton Naveran adding seven points and her post counterpart Jasmine Marchand added six. Caitlynn Cooper contributed four points, Alyssa Jones, Kylee McClellan and Jillian Albright three each, Shelby McKinnon two and Chelsea Herrera one.
Lowry left little doubt of the outcome on Saturday afternoon against Dayton, outscoring the Dust Devils 16-1 in the first quarter. Dayton made just two field goals in the first half, as Lowry led 28-6 at the break.
Lowry outscored Dayton 13-4 in the third quarter and cruised to the victory in the final eight minutes.
Dendary netted 11 points for the second game in a row to lead Lowry. Marchand added nine, Albright eight, Naveran and Herrera six each, McKinnon and Cooper four apiece, Hayley Hall three and McClellan two.
Dating back to last year, Lowry has won 19 games in a row in league play.
Lowry hosts Sparks tonight at 6 p.m. and Truckee on Saturday at 1 p.m.
If The Lady Bucks win both games, they will clinch a playoff spot and will be no worse than the No. 3 seed for the Division I-0A North Regional Championships to be held at Churchill County High School in Fallon on Friday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 21.
