WINNEMUCCA - Playing for the final time this season, the Lowry High School freshmen girls basketball team went out in style on its home floor against Spring Creek on Tuesday night.
When the two rival schools played in late January, the Spartans came away with an eight-point victory over the Lady Bucks. It was a much different outcome in the season finale as Lowry raced to a 22-6 halftime lead and cruised to a 43-21 victory.
After starting the year 3-8, the Lady Bucks won 10 of thier last 12 games to finish the season at 13-10 overall.
"The girls went out there and didn't leave anything on the floor," said LHS head coach Clay Sagers. "They went out and played hard. Spring Creek beat us by eight points the last time, so to beat them the way we did was a nice way to end the season."
Kelsea Perkinson scored the first six points of the game for Lowry and the Lady Bucks held Spring Creek scoreless through the first four minutes of the contest.
The Lady Bucks bookended the first half with the first six points and last six points of the second quarter. The first run included buckets by Maggie Tyree, Caitlynn Cooper and Megan Villarreal. The Spartans scored their only points of the period with 1:29 left in the half, when Lowry's defense led to six quick points by Cooper and Shandra Smith.
The advantage grew to 20 points, at 27-7 following a basket by Emalee Brown and a 3-point field goal by Perkinson. Spring Creek closed out the third period on an 11-2 run to climb to within 11 points but would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Spartans used a late run to cut the lead to 29-18 with five minutes to play in the game, but the Lady Bucks answered back with a 14-3 spurt to clinch the victory.
Perkinson finished with a season-high 15 points, while Cooper added nine. Smith added seven points, including a 3-point field goal. Villarreal contributed five points, Brown three and Celeste Esquivel and Tyree two each.
"I am proud of the girls," Sagers said. "They have improved quite a bit and have come a long way from the start of the season. It was a good group to coach."
