Lady Bucks bounce back with easy win over Spring Creek

It didn't take long for the Lowry High School volleyball team to bounce back from its first league loss of the season.

The Lady Bucks were on their home floor for just the second time this year and easily disposed of Spring Creek in three sets 25-14, 25-14 and 25-20. The Spartans came into the match with just one victory in the Division I-A North and was over winless Sparks.

Lowry improved to 6-1 in league play and 18-2 overall, and is tied with Truckee for second place. The two schools have not played yet - their match was postponed in September due to the King Fire in California. Elko leads the Division I-A North at 8-0.

"It wasn't the prettiest, but a win is a win," said LHS coach Megan Allen. "We had trouble keeping the momentum going. It's tough when a match is that slow, but we can not use that as an excuse. We have to be ready to go."

The first set was bogged down with a number of rotation errors by Spring Creek that stopped play a number of times. Lowry scored four of the first five points, behind kills from Juliana Velasco and Jillian Albright. The Spartans cut the gap to 8-7 at one point, but it was all Lady Bucks from there.

Lowry picked up kills once again from Velasco and Albright and three aces by Madison Lozano to build a 20-11 advantage. The duo of Velasco and Albright struck again late in the set with kills and Meg Montero finished off the last point.

The second set was tied 6-6, when Chelsea Herrera began a 7-0 run with a kill and Madison Montero had two aces and Velasco a kill in that stretch. A trio of sophomores led the Lady Bucks from there, as Brooklyn Waller had two aces, Hannah Hillyer a kill and Madison Montero scored the final two points on a kill and an ace that hit off the top of the net and to the floor for the set-winning point.

Spring Creek came out with four of the first five points of the third set, when Hillyer started a 7-0 Lowry run with a tip in the open floor. She added a kill after that and Madison Montero and Waller had a kill and ace, respectively.

The set went back-and-forth from there, with the Spartans leading for the last time at 15-14. The Lady Bucks caught a break leading 17-16, when the Spartans were called for being in the net. Lowry used kills from Herrera and Madison Montero to increase the gap to 23-16 and Hillyer finished the match with back-to-back kills.

"We won in three and that is what our goal is every time we play," Allen said. "Our young girls were able to get a lot of playing time again and this just going to help us for later in the year. They need that time on the court and it's good for them to have success."

Lowry celebrated Homecoming this week and hosts Dayton Friday at 6 p.m. and Fernley Saturday at noon.[[In-content Ad]]
