The Lowry High School girls golf team may have lost out on an opportunity to repeat as the Division I-A North champion last Thursday at Truckee, but a state tournament berth is all but wrapped up.
Elko reclaimed the top spot with a round of 372, while Lowry was second at 394. Fernley (434) finished third, Churchill County (442) was fourth and Spring Creek (442) rounded out the top five.
"The scores were higher all the way around," said LHS coach Vince Mendiola. "I don't feel we played very well overall. Truckee is a course, where if you hit to the right it's not good. You can get into trouble on the first three or four holes, if you are not hitting the ball well."
Fernley's Brittany Evans was the low medalist at 4-over par 76 and Elko's Kaily Beatty was second at 78. Truckee's Sienna Scibird (78) was third and Lowry's Alyssa Dendary was fourth at 82.
Sophomore's Brooklyn Backus and Savanna Cox followed with rounds of 101 and 104 for the Lady Bucks. Elise Rose shot a 107 on the day, Kaity Sample (113) and Veronica Jones (117) completed the scored for Lowry.
"There was about a 45-minute delay and things got away from us a bit," Mendiola said. "The greens are very sloped and hilly and if you get in the wrong spot, you are going to have trouble. With the delay they were slow, but as the day went on, they sped up quite a bit. We had to use three scores in the 100s and that is not what we wanted. We went through a very hard and crazy week and that was understandable"
Elko leads the league with 59 points, Lowry is second at 55 and Fernley is third at 48. The top three teams in the final regular season standings advance to the state championships to be held at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. Churchill County (40) is a long shot to make the state tournament and would need Lowry or Fernley not to record team scores in the final two tournaments of the season.
Lowry traveled to Fernley on Wednesday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos close out the regular season next Wednesday in Fallon.
The NIAA Division I-A Girls State Golf Championships will take place Monday, Oct. 20, and Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. The Lady Bucks won their lone tournament of the season on the course.
"We have a couple more weeks to improve on things and get a bit better," Mendiola said. "We have the one tournament left in Fallon and go to state and play a course that we are familiar with."[[In-content Ad]]
