WINNEMUCCA - Get ready for one big afternoon of exciting rodeo action.
This year's Humboldt County Labor Day Rodeo is seeing some big changes including a Saturday only performance at 2 p.m. in the outdoor arena at the Winnemucca Events Complex.
The changes are the result of this year's showcase event: the Clay Walker/Krystal Keith concert, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Winnemucca Event Center.
This year's 92nd annual rodeo promises its own showcase performance with an unforgettable opening pageant, some of the region's toughest livestock, and cowboys and cowgirls from all over the West who are sure to turn the heat up on Humboldt County's hottest competition.
Plus, for the first time in many years, the 2013 competition will be sanctioned by the PRCA, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-a switch that producers Pat O'Maley and Drew Blessinger of the Slash T Rodeo Company say will definitely increase contestant participation.
The Labor Day Rodeo will feature competition in eight events, including Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing and Women's Breakaway Roping.
While the Labor Day Rodeo offers heated competition for the older set, younger buckaroos will have their shot in the arena too. The Great Basin Challenge will test rodeo skills for those from birth to age 12 at 1 p.m. Sunday with Stick Horse Barrels and Dummy Roping.
First place winners in each event and each age group will receive silver buckles. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, August 30, in the Winnemucca Events Complex office. There is no fee to participate.
Regular admission to each evening's rodeo performance is $10 for adults and $4 for children, ages 6 to 12. Kids five and under get in free. Advance rodeo tickets are now available for $8 and $2 respectively at Boot Barn, C.B. Brown, Reliable Hardware, Ron's Seed & Supply and Tips Western.
