WINNEMUCCA - This year's Tri-County Fair will offer a veritable extravaganza of activities for kids of all ages. From potato projects to mini-construction creations, there's no limit to the free fun that can be had as part of this year's festivities. The Mutt Show contest will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, on the Main Stage Outside at the Winnemucca Events Complex. Local "mutts" will compete for great prizes in four categories including "Cutest Mutt," "Costume Contest," "Best Trick" and "Best Dog & Handler." Signups will take place beginning at 2 p.m. Entry forms are available online at www.LaborDayFair.com or in the 2012 Fair Guide. The Potato Critters Contest will combine 100 pounds of Winnemucca Farms potatoes for kids of all ages. The result will be hundreds of "potato critters" that might resemble anything from a leaping lizard to your lazy brother. Last year the contest drew in dozens of designers who used everything from toothpicks and olives to raisins and marshmallows to complete their critter creations. Prizes will be awarded in five age categories, including 5 and under, 6 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 18 and 19 and older. The contest is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, in the Winnemucca Events Complex Exhibit Hall meeting room. Of course, no fair would be complete without a little creative construction. Area building maniacs are invited to put their erecting expertise to the test as part of the Mini-Construction Contest. The objective of this fun contest is to use a variety of construction items like Lincoln Logs, Legos, match sticks, toothpicks, straws, sugar cubes, paper clips, tack, string, glue and imagination to construct a building, a castle, fort or art project. Pre-entry is recommended and exhibitors are limited to one entry each. Entries cannot be larger than 2- feet-by-2 feet. Entries will be accepted during regular entry check-in times, from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, and from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. Prizes will be awarded to winners in five age categories, including 5 and under, 6 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 18 and 19 and older. Those with a flair for crayons and color are invited to take part in the annual Coloring Contest. Coloring blanks are available at the Humboldt County Extension Office, the Winnemucca Convention Center or online at www.LaborDayFair.com. Winners will be announced in five age groups, including 3 to 5, 6 to 9, 10 to 12 and 13 to 18.
