KINGSTON - The Kingston Volunteer Fire Department hosted children from the Austin Elementary School May 11.

Kingston Fire Chief Jerry Simoni, Kingston Assistant Fire Chief Adam Greenfield and Cpl. Dennis Lowe, with the Lander County Sheriff's Office, who is also a Kingston volunteer firefighter, showed the kids fire department equipment and procedures.

Greenfield donned full "turnout" gear, complete with his breathing apparatus so that the kids would understand a firefighter is beneath all the equipment and not be afraid if they came into a house to save them.

Each child was able to also try on the gear, which provided lots of giggles as they struggled to walk around with the 30 pound-plus boots, pants and jackets.

The kids also got to ride in the fire truck, and of course, were thrilled to be able to sound the siren. Afterward, cupcakes with "fire" frosting (made by Erin Greenfield) and hotdogs were served. Greenfield presented each child with a bag of fire safety information and games.
