BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Kingston firefighters are gearing up for the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department Annual Picnic to be held at the Kingston Orchard and Lee Baker Park on Aug. 4 starting at 11 a.m.
The event, which is being organized by firefighters Dennis Lowe and Chip Colpitts with the help of the other firefighters, will include a barbecue and refreshments, bingo, a cake walk, a duck race, horseshoes, raffles, gun raffles, live auctions and kids games.
Smokey Bear will also be there. This is the eighth annual picnic.
"It's one of the two fundraising events that the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department holds," said firefighter Shannon Thiss. "All the monies are used to benefit the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department. It's a good day to come out and meet your neighbors, meet your fire department and give to the community."
Food will be served starting at noon and will include a smoked tri-tip roast, hot dogs, hamburgers and homemade salads, including pasta salad and potato salad, said Thiss.
A bar will be open and beer, wine, wine coolers, soda and water will be served.
Round Mountain Gold will be donating the hot dogs, hamburgers and roast and community residents will be whipping up homemade salads and side dishes. The rest will be paid for by the fire department, said Thiss.
The barbecue is $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6 to 10 and free for kids 5 and under. Firefighters, with the help of Austin firefighter Bob Woolley, will be cooking the barbecue.
Proceeds from the entire picnic event will go toward the fire department to pay for truck repairs, radios and safety equipment, said Thiss.
Starting at 11 a.m. will be the sale of ducks for the duck race, raffle tickets and meal tickets and horseshoe tournament sign-ups. Raffle tickets are $1 each and will be sold throughout the day. They can also be purchased ahead of time at the Kingston Water Office at 112 Gold Knob Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
All of the prizes for the raffles and bingo and the live auction items are being donated by individuals and businesses in Kingston and the surrounding communities.
The two guns for the gun raffles, a Hi-Point .45 Auto Pistol and a Savage .243 Hunting rifle with scope, were purchased by the fire department, said Thiss.
So far, Thiss said a one-night stay at the Red Lion in Elko has been donated as a raffle prize. Dean Day Engineering donated $100, which will go toward buying gift cards for the raffles. Two $50 gift certificates for the Toiyabe Café in Austin were also donated and will either go toward the raffle prizes or bingo prizes. Thiss said she is expecting a lot more items. Anyone who would like to donate can call Thiss at (775) 964-2120.
The cakes for the cake walk are being homemade by the firefighters and their families. Anyone who wishes to bake and donate a cake is asked to call Thiss ahead of time. She is hoping for around eight to 10 cakes.
There will be a bounce house for the kids. The kids games are slated to start around 1 p.m. and the duck race and cake walk will kick off around 2 p.m. Ducks are $5 each and the prize will be half of the cash pot, said Thiss.
The bingo will go all day and several live auctions will be held throughout the day starting at around 1 p.m. Bingo cards are $5 each. A horseshoe tournament will be held throughout the afternoon starting around 1 p.m. The prize will be half of the cash pot.
Last year, the event saw around 140 people and Thiss said she is hoping to see around the same amount or more this year. The event raised $6,000 last year.
