KINGSTON - The Kingston Parks Department has been working toward the improvement of Kingston's local common areas.

Relying on donations and a small annual budget from the Kingston Town Board, they have created a popular fishing pond with an island and bridge, installed a beach along the Kingston Creek, built a parks storage building and repaired the old playground equipment, softball backstop and adjacent benches.

The Parks Department has recently purchased 14 large trees. They have been planted at the playground area, backstop of the softball field, at the pond and around the perimeter of the ball park.

A special tree will be planted for former resident James Kielhack by specific donation ($500) by his daughter Crystal Kielhack. In another act of kindness, the Bruce Kent family has donated money toward a tree in memory of their good friend Travis Owens.

The Kingston Parks Department's future plans include an irrigation system in the orchard and playground, a pavilion structure, replanting/reseeding the lawn in the orchard and playground, adding a decorative split-rail fence and additional picnic tables for the playground area.

"This is our continued efforts to make Kingston Parks beautiful and usable," Kingston Parks Director John Miles said. "It will take time, money and community support. Our support has been from local volunteers, donations and grants. In the recent year, we have received money from the tourism board, $3,000, Kingston Town Board, $3,000, Lander County commissioners, $2,700 for irrigation system and $5,000 toward a concrete pad for a future pavillon. In previous years the KMAI (Kingston Management Association/HMO) donated $10,000 but has since requested the return of its donation."

A letter requesting donations to the Town of Kingston has recently been mailed out to local businesses and local residents asking for donations for Kingston's operations, including the Parks Department. Anyone who wants to donate can call Shannon at (775) 964-2120.

There will be a farmers market on Aug. 31 with vendors selling produce, art, homemade jellies, ice cream, a barbecue and beverages.

Anyone interested in being a vendor can contact Velinda Ward at (702) 349-0667 or Ann at (775) 964-1046. The Farmers Market will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Kingston Orchard.

Also coming up is the Cristmas Bazaar with food and local vendors selling Christmas gift ideas. It will be held at the Kingston Community Center/Water Department in November. Anyone interested in being a vendor can contact Velinda Ward at (702) 349-0667.
