Keeping families farming

Editor:

In response to a proposed regulation by the Department of Labor that would restrict the work youth can do on farms and ranches, I submitted the following comment at www.KeepFamiliesFarming.com:

I grew up on a family farm and I feel that the things I learned there cannot be taught anywhere else in life. It is important for the next generation of children to learn about responsibility and hard work from working side by side with their parents. Family farms are very important because they are the backbone of this country. As a rural ag teacher I have seen firsthand how beneficial that ag jobs are for the youth of America. It gives students a sense of self-worth and allows them to see how rewarding hard work can be. It also teaches them life skills from hands-on learning that cannot be obtained from classroom learning alone. How are we going to feed this country in years to come if we are not teaching the youth of this country the agriculture-related skills that are necessary in order for agriculture to continue?

Sincerely,
