WINNEMUCCA - The sweetest party of the year kicks off Saturday afternoon at the Winnemucca Convention Center.
The Just Desserts fundraiser benefits the Humboldt County Bookmobile - and organizers have designed it to be a great evening of family-friendly fun. The event is sponsored by The Humboldt Sun and the library.
Tickets for the event are $10 per adult; $5 for kids ages 5 -12 and $35 for a family. With their ticketed entry, attendees will enjoy an unlimited dessert buffet, punch or coffee. "We will have a wide array of desserts coming to this event," said Humboldt Sun organizer J. Carmen Kofoed.
"The Winnemucca Inn's chef Anton is preparing a special treat, plus we've got cakes from Sid's Restaurant, Chihuahua's and so many more coming to the event. The Cake Walk is going to be crazy! Bookmobile librarian Ginny Dufurrena has a group of ladies making cakes that are going to knock everybody's socks off."
In addition to the food, there will be a full bar run by Women in Mining, there will be live music by local's favorite Listless Numbers of Youth, plus Bingo run by the Sonoma Heights PTA. "I wanted to make sure there was fun in store for both kids and adults," Kofoed said. "So I worked to brainstorm a few games that would be both challenging and fun. The Potty Pitch is really going to turn some heads - and Lily Pad Leapers is probably the most difficult bean-bag toss we could create. I hope everybody brings a few extra dollars to play the games - they'll be fun."
The Silent Auction tables are sure to be a huge draw during the night. "We have had great response from businesses and individuals around town," said Winnemucca Publishing General Manager Holly Rudy-James. "Everyone has been very generous in their donations - there are some really beautiful things here."
One of the grandest prizes for the night will be a handmade quilt created by Cynthia Lee Moody. The large red and neutral toned quilt features vintage fabrics and is machine quilted by Moody at her longarm quilting studio. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and are available through Friday night at the library, or at Just Desserts. The drawing will be held at 8 p.m.
Doors for the event open at 4 p.m., with everything expected to wrap up by about 9 p.m., Kofoed said. Advance tickets are available at the library, the Chamber of Commerce office or the Sun office, or at the door.
