Winnemucca Junior High teacher Larry Renteria brought real-life career and interview preparation into his classroom Tuesday through the Northern Nevada STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Project, which is supported by the Northern Nevada Professional Development Program (NNRPDP). Renteria said that he has always had his students write covers letter, resumes, and complete applications in the past, but the support of NNRPDP and the STEM Project has "catapulted the idea to a new level for these students." The culminating year-end activity for Renteria's students was to "apply" for a real job via an online job site and write cover letters, resumes, and fill out applications. These were then reviewed by two community members: Nene Kirlay, former administrator with the Oakland Police Department and inventory control specialist at Boot Barn, and Terri Otto, former manager of Boot Barn and Vault Denim manager and manager trainer. Several students were then selected for real-life interviews, while the rest of Renteria's students interviewed in small groups with peers.
