Our loving mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, Josephine Luna, passed away peacefully in the arms of her family Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, 2012.
Josephine or Jo (as she preferred) was born in Austin on Feb. 9, 1931. She was one of seven children born to Sophie and Frank Leon. She attended school in Battle Mountain and Sparks, Nevada. She later worked as a nurse's aide at Battle Mountain Hospital.
Towards the end of World War II, on Oct. 4, 1947, Josephine married her husband and partner of 65 years, John Luna, in Winnemucca, Nevada. Immediately following their marriage Josephine and John made their initial home in a converted railroad boxcar, traveling between Winnemucca and Carlin while John worked the track for the Southern Pacific Railroad. This is when Josephine commenced her vocation as a caring, nurturing, and loving mother to her four children: Rorie, Vickie, Jamie, and John Jr. She always put her family first and demanded that her children be raised and worship in the teachings of St. Paul's Catholic Church. Josephine was the source of strength and laughter for her family. She always put others first. Josephine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Her greatest loves were her family, her church, and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Sophie Leon, brothers, John and Jess Leon, sister, Francis Weighall, daughter, Jamie Pace, and grandson, Ben Kieser. She is survived by her husband, John Luna, brothers, Dave and Roy Leon, sister, Margie Marcinick, daughters Rorie Luna, Vickie (Bruce) Easterday, and son, John Luna Jr. She was blessed with grandchildren, Aaron and Colin Luna, Denise (George) Barton, Clayton (Zebrina) Easterday, Abby Jo Easterday, and Brian (Stephanie) Pace. In addition, she was a great grandmother to Lane and Chance Barton, Tianna and Tierra Easterday, Oliver and Emelia Pace. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephew; and friends.
Recital of the Holy Rosary will be Sept. 16, 2012, 6 p.m., at Albertson's Funeral Home. A mass celebrating Jo's life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday Sept. 17, 2012 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Graveside services and burial will follow.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Humboldt General Hospital for the tremendous quality and compassionate care provided to Josephine.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Father Pepe's Pantry in care of St. Paul's Catholic Church.
