Joining Forces is Aug. 2 - 13 Targeting speeding and distracted driving

WINNEMUCCA - It's summertime and motorists are out traveling to and from their favorite vacation destinations. The Nevada Highway Patrol wants everyone to have a safe, accident free summer when traveling across Nevada's highways.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, along with sheriff's departments from White Pine, Elko, Lander and Humboldt counties and police departments from Elko, Winnemucca and West Wendover, will be "Joining Forces" to save lives and reduce accidents. The focus for the next week will be speeding and distracted driving.

With Nevada's new cellphone and no-texting laws, we want to remind motorists that it is a distraction, and when driving, you must use a hands free device when talking on a cellphone.

After the third offense, your driver's license may be suspended for six months. Fines range from $50 to $250. Since Jan. 1, 4,500 citations have been issued by the Nevada Highway Patrol statewide.

It is also that time of year where road construction is everywhere. Fines double in work zones. Watch your speed around these areas. Slow down in work zones and watch for construction workers and equipment.

The "Joining Forces" campaigns are funded through the DPS Office of Traffic Safety. The ultimate goal is zero fatalities on Nevada highways.
