1919-2015
John W. Van Wart, 95, of Winnemucca, Nev., passed away Feb. 21, 2015, with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 20, 1919, to Harold and Anna Van Wart in East Meadow, N.Y.
Corporal Van Wart served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. John was with the coordinating air support for the troops on the ground. He landed in Normandy just after midnight on June 6, 1944, in the first glider to land on D-Day. He continued to serve and eventually participated in the invasion of Holland (Market Garden) and the Battle of the Bugle. John was honorably discharged from the Army on Nov. 11, 1945.
John was an aerospace engineer and a life member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, 32 degree. He also belonged to the Fairfield First Baptist Church. John enjoyed taking long drives and being with family.
John is survived by his children, John (Cindy), Randi Shaver (Wayne) and Rod (Tammy); grandchildren, Christopher, Lisa, Kim, Adam, Raymond, Erik and Ryan; brothers, Louis, Roger and Donald; and sisters, Nancy and Ruth. John was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; son, Eric; brothers, Lawrence and Harold; and sisters, Alice, Amy, Ethel and Ann Jean.
He also loved children and gave to several children's charities. In lieu of flowers please give to the children's charity of your choice.
