Joe R. Mustard, 70, Rapid City, died at his home, Sunday, June 10, 2012.
Joe loved working hard! He started as a young paper boy in Winnemucca. Once out of high school, he joined the National Guard where he fell in love with Accounting.
Joe married Nancy White in Wahpeton, N.D. on July 11, 1968. He and Nancy met in Winnemucca - he was selling 50/50 tickets (the prize being a case of whiskey) in a local bar to raise money for the National Guard; she bought a ticket from him that evening and they were together that moment on for 43 years.
He and Nancy moved to Oregon when they were first married, so she could teach and he could go to school. Joe worked his way through college working at a service station as a mechanic and later he and Nancy delivered Lay's potato chips on the weekends - one of their favorite memories. Joe graduated from Southern Oregon College and received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor in Economics.
They moved to Rapid City, S.D., in June 1972. His employment started in Rapid City at Dunmire, Short, Tobias and Paulson doing taxes. He also worked at: Ramco, Rushmore Homes, Rushmore Mortgage, Midwest Campers, API Supply, and Native American Heritage Association. In addition to his other employment at the time, every January to April Joe did income taxes for dozens of people and considered it more a hobby than work. Throughout the past couple decades he also worked with Rice Honda Suzuki - where he loved to banter and story tell with his longtime friend Don Rice. It is only fitting that he ends his long career with his "family" and the company he loved so dearly, Strider Sports.
Joe was on the vestry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, coached Little League and soccer for his daughter's teams, served on the Little League Board, won several awards while in the bowling league, helped organize a men's only Gourmet Club, was a volunteer fire fighter and ambulance driver, and a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Joe was known to his family and friends as a practical joker and someone who would always help you out whether it was needed or not. He had a passion for accounting and was never afraid of a hard day's work! He could lighten the room with his quick jokes and talked to anyone and everyone - and the conversation always started with "So, where are you from?" He was dedicated to his family and was their rock and foundation!
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy, Rapid City, three daughters; Jill Peña, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Barb Mustard, Rapid City and Amy Mustard, Rapid City and a grand daughter, Ellen.
