WINNEMUCCA - The Stalking Resource Center of the National Center for Victims of Crime has issued a series of awareness materials featuring the theme "Name It. Stop It" for this year's observance of January as "Stalking Awareness Month."
Nevada's anti-stalking law states that " a person who, without lawful authority, willfully or maliciously engages in a course of conduct that would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, or harassed, or fearful for the immediate safety of a family or household member, and that actually causes the victim to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated, or harassed, or fearful for the immediate safety of a family or household member, commits the crime of stalking."
Despite what some may believe, a person does not have to be physically assaulted, have their home broken in to or see someone else in their life being harmed in order to be the target in a stalking situation. At the same time, stalking is not merely being annoying, pushy, rude or just odd.
Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services will support the efforts of the Stalking Resource Center and address the issue of stalking through community displays and other awareness activities throughout the month. WDVS would also like to invite the community to read its weekly feature articles. A new WDVS feature article is posted on the "Notes" section of its official Facebook page every Monday through Friday, with all four articles appearing in the "WDVS Features" section of the News and Features portion of their main web site, www.winnemuccadvs.org.
The stalking awareness features will be posted to the Facebook page's "Notes" section from Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, to Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, with all three pieces available on the main site on Friday, Jan. 6, by noon.
