James Clifton Porter, 77, of Boise, Idaho passed away on Sunday morning, Feb. 9, 2014 at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center with his family by his side.
James Clifton Porter was born on Jan. 15, 1937 in Cavalier, N.D., the son of Clifton and Una (Davey) Porter. He spent his childhood in Hannah, N.D. and graduated from Hannah High School. Jim graduated from Mayville Teacher's College, North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1959. Upon graduation Jim taught at Gackle High School in Gackle, N.D. for four years. Jim continued his education receiving his Master of Science in Education from Northern State College, Aberdeen, S.D. in 1965.
In 1962 Jim and Sally were married in Gackle and moved to Winnemucca. He taught at Humboldt County High School for four years. In 1966 he became principal of Humboldt County High School and subsequently Albert Lowry High School. In 1979 he became principal at Sonoma Heights Elementary School, retiring in 1992. Jim was adamant all students received a good education. Jim also taught political science classes at Great Basin College. After his retirement, he was civil defense director for several years.
Jim spent many hours with his family enjoying the outdoors of northern Nevada. He was especially fond of hiding amongst goose decoys and gathering petrified wood. He also enjoyed yard work and maintaining a green lawn. In late 2011 Jim and Sally moved to Boise, Idaho.
James C. Porter is survived by his wife, Rosella "Sally" Porter, sons, Michael (Joni) and Dennis (Stacie) and his three precious grandchildren,
Kylie Rae, Ryan Michael and Drew Elizabeth, all of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by his sister, Mildred (Fred) Lembke, Neche, N.D., brother, Ray Porter, Devils Lake, N.D. and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Porter, Warren, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and William and sister-in-law Fern.
The family will host an informal reception in Winnemucca at a later date.
The family is especially grateful for the care Jim received in the medical facilities and from Dr. Raymond Hooft.
