RENO - Zack Totans is the new coordinator of TMCC's Veterans Resource Center, overseeing numerous services available to assist veterans who have enrolled at the college. He served for more than four years in the U.S. Army as an infantryman, with two tours of duty in Iraq. Totans is a Reno native, TMCC 2012 alumnus and is graduating in December with a double major of Business Administration in Finance and Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno.
"The Veterans Resource Center is here as a place for our student veterans to use as their own. We have study areas, computers, refrigerators, and a microwave that are all available for use," Totans said. "We are also planning upcoming veteran activities at TMCC and the surrounding community, such as barbeques, job fairs, and other veteran-related events."
Totans was a member of the Student Veteran Advisory Council for Gov. Brian Sandoval. Totans also was president of Wolf Pack Veterans, a Student Veterans of America (SVA) approved chapter, and is enthusiastic to help service members enrolling at TMCC.
"I had a very veteran-friendly experience when I began attending TMCC, I was able to hit the ground running from the moment that I enrolled," Totans said.
Veterans also have assistance while planning to enroll in college. Veterans Upward Bound is free to veterans and is a program that tailors services based on each service person's needs.
"At Veterans Upward Bound, VUB for short, we create individualized programs, develop a relationship, respect the individual veteran, and partner with vets for their success," said Robert Hernandez, director of Veterans Upward Bound. Veterans Upward Bound helps veterans enter college and is 100 percent federally funded. There are 49 such programs in the country, and TMCC's VUB is the only one in Nevada, serving eight counties; Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey and Washoe.
