District Attorney Mike Macdonald took the opportunity to introduce one of his two new deputy district attorneys to the Humboldt County Commissioners earlier this month. Macdonald said Gabrielle Carr will stand in occasionally as counsel for the county commissioners when he can't be present; she'll also sometimes represent his office as counsel for the Regional Planning Commission.
Carr's extensive civil background was a very welcome addition to the district attorney's office. "My passion is on the civil side of the law," said Carr.
She is a former deputy attorney general for the state of Nevada under then Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa. She formerly served as a deputy city attorney for Reno. In all, she has 15 years of government law experience.
"I welcome the opportunity to work in rural Nevada, as I'm an outdoor girl and love the small town environment, friendly people, and peaceful atmosphere," the native Nevadan said.
"We're really excited about Gabrielle's background with state and local government and her experience in departments within the Attorney General's office representing different agencies," said Macdonald. "Most recently, she has been in private practice in family law and she will be involved in child support enforcement in our office using the skills she developed."
The other new deputy district attorney in Humboldt County is Anthony "Tony" Gordon. "I'm actually returning to Winnemucca," Gordon said. His first job out of law school was in the State Public Defender's Office based in Winnemucca in 1986-1987. The two years after that were spent as deputy district attorney in Lander County.
In 1989, he moved into Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa's office to work as a drug civil forfeiture deputy.
In 1991 he joined the FBI as an agent and went through the training at Quantico. His FBI work was done mostly in Los Angeles. During that time he also served as a lawyer for the Army Reserve. He retired in 2013 from the FBI, but says, "once a lawyer, always a lawyer," and when he saw the advertisement for a deputy DA in Humboldt County on the State Bar website, he got right on the phone.
"I have property and good friends here and in Battle Mountain. I wanted to get back," he said, adding,
"there is so much less traffic here."
He says Winnemucca has grown since he was last here. "The town didn't have a Walmart and the McDonald's play place was brand new back then."
As to what he'll be doing as a Humboldt County Deputy DA Gordon said, "The criminal side of the law is natural for me; I've done defense and criminal investigation and I'll bring all of that experience with me."
Macdonald agreed that Gordon's experience is welcome.
"Anthony is going to be working a mostly criminal law caseload," he said. "We'll use his experience and training as a deputy state public defender and his time as deputy DA and deputy attorney general, as well as his FBI training and experience."
